Broken Toe

So, funny story. I broke my little toe at 2am on Wednesday morning (Valentine’s Day).

D, a few weeks ago, has figured how to climb out of his crib. For some reason, he goes to sleep with me in the room, even though he’s calling out for mom. After a while, he gives up and goes to sleep. Sure, I can leave anytime afterwards, but boy does he get upset if he discovered I’m not around. So it’s been easier for me to just camp out in his room for the night. So I’ve been sleeping on the recliner for the past few weeks.

Tuesday night, we put him in the crib and it was a pretty normal evening. He woke up around 11 or 11:30pm and then again around 1am Wednesday. Both times, he was back asleep in 5 minutes or so (and bonus, no escaping the crib). During this time, I’m awake and I figured I’d get some development work done (not work related). I’m about to pass out and decide to put my gear away. It’s about 2am. The room is dark. I put my Macbook on the middle shelf of the bookshelf (see 1st pic) and decided that was in easy reach of D so I moved it to the top shelf. I think I actually placed it on the red book you can see laying horizontally. I then started to lean back and get settled in.

I heard a sliding noise and didn’t think anything of it until there was a loud thunk (and I could have sworn there was a crack sound in there as well). My 2017 full equipped MacBook Pro (15″ flavor), slid off the shelf. It landed on my little toe and then hit the floor. I wanted to scream but knew people were sleeping. I’m sure I muttered something under my breath.

I freaked out – this was the 2nd time I dropped this laptop! I do a quick spot check and the screen turns on and all appears fine. The keyboard functions fine. I run my fingers around the edges and all the usual dents and dings are there and I can’t feel any new ones. Whew!

I caught my breath and listened. Nobody woke up. Olessia is a pretty light sleeper and I was sure she would have woken up to wonder what happened. Nope. D was just 3-4 feet away and he was still asleep (the little guy has a really quiet snore).

Priorities, I then take the laptop to the bathroom where I can turn a light on and do a 2nd spot check because I can’t believe the thing fell and didn’t break. Everything looked fine. Time to check my toe. It looked a bit swollen (no surprise) and had a minor cut due to the edge of the laptop hitting it. My toe tingled a bit. I iced it for 10 minutes as best as I could and then went to bed (well, went to the recliner).

Wednesday morning, I showed Olessia and the toe had turned several different colors of red and purple. So off to the urgent care. Olessia and D came along and gave me a ride (thank you!). My toe was numb and really not in any pain. They checked me out and took xrays and didn’t see anything so they buddy wrapped the toe and sent me off. I walked a block to catch the F train to work and right as I got on, I get a call. The urgent care had the xray tech check and they found a fracture. They wanted me to return so I can get a new shoe. So I managed to get off before the train doors closed and headed back.

I got the shoe and hobbled to work. Again, no pain other than a tad bit of discomfort from the swelling. I visited a foot doctor this morning and confirmed that I did break it. The good news is I don’t need the special shoe. I just get to buddy wrap it for the next 4 weeks and wear roomy shoes so the swelling doesn’t bother me.

Lessons learned:

MacBook Pros are pretty durable.

Don’t drop one on your toe.
