That’s a first for SBC

Wacky!

SBC is usually good about being on time when you need them. Usually.
Because its SBC (formally Ameritech), its hard to get them to do
anything when you want them to. So I needed SBC to evaulate a phone
line that got wrapped around my tree (the trunk is in the process of
falling down). The operator said they’ll be out on Monday, August 16th,
from 3-7pm and I should be home for it. Its Friday, August 13th, at 2pm
and I get a call from the SBC tech saying they’re there and they have no
problem re-wiring the line away from the tree. Cool, I guess. I was
told I was to be home for this. Oh well. I asked the tech, “weren’t
you supposed to be out on Monday?” The response was, “no, the work
order right here says today.” This is the first time I’ve seen them
error in my advantage.

Back to the Island

A lot happened. I won’t go into all the details, but I got sick on
Thursday and had to call off sick on Friday. I didn’t get anything done
but get a hair cut on Saturday. Sunday I launched
href=”http://www.ancientrhino.com”>Ancient Rhino
. I was starting to
feel ok on Sunday.

Monday we went to Kelleys Island. THAT was fun! Whatever I had caught,
I wasn’t feeling the effects of any more and we went to the island. We
eat dinner at the Casino. Walked around some and enjoyed the sites.
Then we headed back and I started a campfire. We enjoyed the evening
together. Oh yeah, I turned 30 on Monday too…

Tuesday went great. We got up and had breakfast at Bag the Moon. Then
we went back and packed up our campsite. Then we spent a good amount of
time at the beach and in the water. We got tired of that and then we
headed home and had dinner with my mom. Its been a busy week! And
thank you to everyone who wished me happy birthday!

So that’s also why there hasn’t been any updates to the site. As you
notice, I’ve swapped the counter with one that counts the days down to
my calculus class (ugh!).

I haven’t forgotten about the Tanzania pics either. There’s only a few
rolls left to do. But I was way too sick to even think about scanning
them. If all goes well, I might get some more up tonight.

Tanzania Pics

The gallery got upgraded and tweaked. I’ve ironed out the kinks and the
7 rolls of Tanzania film are now up. I
hope to have the last 7 rolls up by the end of next weekend. If you’re
wondering what is taking so long, I’m scanning each negative
individually. I’m doing very little image touch up. You’ll notice a
lot of black borders hanging around the images. This is due to how the
negative gets aligned over the scan head.

A Lot Happens in a Weekend

Went to the University of Akron and gave them a lot of money for class
and books (which reminds me I have to save the receipts!).

The Integra rolled over 110,000 miles on the way back from Akron. I
think its now broken in.

Saturday we went and got furniture and supplies from our grandmother’s
house. There’s some pics at the end of this gallery:
href=”/gallery/moving”>House Moving
.

Went to a two year-old’s birthday party on Sunday. It was festive and
loud and the two year-old was worn out before the party got started.
But it looks like everyone had a good time.

I’ve been scanning in pictures from my Tanzania trip. I have 14 rolls
of film and 7 of them have been scanned in. I’m scanning them from the
negatives. Although Gallery hiccuped this morning and I get to
re-upload them all. It also appears the galleries all got shuffled
around. Ugh. You know what that means! Time to upgrade gallery.

The Jetta Experience

So my Integra is in the shop for an oil change and some other minor items. To make life a little easier, I’ve got a rental for the day. Normally, Acura dealers are supposed to hook you up with a free Acura vehicle as the rental. But this one Acura dealer works a little too closely with Enterprise. At least they cut you a good discount. So they put me in a Volkswagon Jetta.

The seat feels like I’m sitting on a somewhat firm sofa. It grips me pretty well. It is pretty comfy. Yet, I’m not ready to take any quick turns in the car since I feel like I’ll slide out of the seat. I wasn’t able to get the seat and steering wheel in a position that made me feel at home. The positioning felt “ok” but that was about it. Otherwise, the dash looked cool and everything was easy to read. There was tons of head room and leg room. And the ride was nice and smooth, just like the automatic transmission. The car felt like it had some “omph” to it which was nice. But it didn’t feel nimble or responsive like my Integra. But that’s ok. They’re two different cars (the Jetta a 4-door family sedan and the Integra is a sporty hatchback).

As for an Enterprise car, the Jetta was a treat from their usual stable of uber-cheap econo-boxes.

New flying cert: Sport Pilot

The certificate rating is not official yet. It has to bounce around a
bit more in the White House Office of Management and Budget for
approval. But this certificate looks pretty cool. The recreational
pilot’s license was too close to a private pilot’s license without any
real benefits. The Sport Pilot license has a lowered amount of training
needed to get started and doesn’t require a medical exam. You just need
a valid driver’s license which gets applied as your medical certificate
(if I read it correctly). Of course, the aircraft and airspace you fly
in is regulated, but it also keeps things affordable.

Specs and details can be found here:

Plenty of Culture and More Grilling

We went to the Improv (in the Flats) on Friday and enjoyed some live
standup comedy. We were going to go dancing afterwards, but day had us
pretty worn out (uh oh – I think we’re old!).

Then we went to a photo studio on Saturday. Nice place and a they do
some great work. Then we went shopping and got some good cooking
ingrediants.

border=”0″ align=”left” />
Saturday night we went to West Side Story at the Lorain Palace Theatre.
They put on a good show. My mom was in it so we had fun hanging out at
the pit. Almost as soon as the show ended, the fireworks across the
street started. They opened the doors and instructed everyone to check
it out. Wow were we close! The firework remains were falling on our
heads!

border=”0″ align=”left” />
Sunday started as a lazy day. But I finally
got motivated to get some shopping done. I mowed the lawn. Then
sprayed for weeds. Then I fired up the grill. Mmm. Made
stuffed baked potatoes and chicken (BBQ and
grill rub flavor). We didn’t know if it would compliment the meal or
not, but we had a nice Russian wine (it tasted great!).

Trying some new cafes

Tuesday of this week we tried out
title=”Fournos Cafe”>Fournos Cafe. Olessia had just finished up two
days of working full time and her second job on both Monday and
Tuesday. This was her first week back from vacation. And Tuesday her
paperwork for INS was all set.

I’ve been to Fournos for lunch and it was good. A little pricey, but
the food was good and filling and the service was great. Since Olessia
typically gets home from her long day around 9:30pm, I wasn’t sure we’d
be able to make it there before the kitchen closes at 10pm. But she
ended up getting home a lot earlier and we were able to enjoy a great
dinner.

Earlier last week I had researched local Russian restaurants. There
really isn’t too many in Cleveland except for one called The Globe. But
on Tuesday evening, I was reminded of The Globe and was told they had
great food. Olessia has had a taste for a really good soup for some
time and has always been disappointed when we go to a restaurant and
they only have one soup: the soup of the day. And its usually a very
unexciting soup.

So we stopped at The Globe for dinner not knowing what to expect (that’s
part of the fun!). She was immediately happy. She found borsch soup,
several Russian salads, and a lot of traditional Russian home style
dishes. I went with the Keiv with porojak (not sure of the spelling on
that). The porojak is awesome. It has a sturdy, yet flakey, pastry
which is about an eighth of an inch in thickness. And its folded over
like you would see for pastry. And inside is a meat filling. Mmm!
Olessia said they are very difficult to make. Olessia had the borsch
soup which also came with a porojak. She also had a dish called “From
Russia with Love” which was 4 Russian style pancakes each with a mound
of black caviar. The pancakes look like pita bread, but actually have a
smooth consistancy (almost similar to a regular pancake, but very thin
and dense and not as dry or fluffy). These are folded over about 4
times to make a triangle shape. And then a generous spoon full of
caviar was placed at the corner of the traingle. You then can spread
the caviar all over the pancake and eat (and they serve 4 of these on a
plate). It sounded like this is more of a breakfast meal, but it does
get served as dinner very often too. I had tried some. Both her soup
and caviar dish were awesome. I opted for dessert. It was hard to
pick. But ended up with this chocolate cake that vanilla waffer-like
layers to it between chocolate cake. Before beginning, Olessia told me
Russians use spoons to eat cake. The server brought out two forks, but
we opted for the spoons anyways. Oh the cake was good! Olessia said
she doesn’t like “cake” as we Americans know it as. But this cake was
definitely a traditional Russian cake and she loved it.

Fournos can be found in Independence on Rockside Road. Check their
website for directions. I haven’t been able to find a website for The
Globe. Its located in Akron on Portage Trails.

Nomad

Last month my Archos Jukebox FM player died. It went out pretty
dramatically. Its had problems for the last 6 months (note, I had the
player for about a year). It would get stuck when playing and it forced
you to shut it down and restart it. But then it got flakey and wouldn’t
start up. Last month, the LCD display got flakey and would blank out.
If you pushed on it, it would briefly show up. So I took the player
apart. I found the problem, but couldn’t figure out a way to fix it.
But pressing on the LCD wasn’t the way to do it. I ended up cracking an
edge of the display. Ugh. So I kept fiddling. And now only the top
couple lines of the display works.

Now I absolutely loved this player. At least when it worked. Because
when it worked, it worked great and had a TON of features. It had a ton
of features because of an open source operating system project had
developed and built their own operating system for the player. It
rocked. But it can’t rock if the player doesn’t work.

So I’ve been listening to 100.7 and 92.3FM here in Cleveland. They both
suck. They seem to have a list of “music that works” and don’t seem
excited to play anything else unless its new and needs a marketing push
(for example, when the band has an upcoming Cleveland concert). When it
becomes obvious a station is doing this, it becomes really hard to
continue listening. Since I no longer had an MP3 player, I would just
put up with the two stations (switching between the two when the song
list got old). Funny part of all of this is just about 2 weeks ago I’ve
been getting radio survey phone calls. I’ve listened to about 36 song
clips and given them my opinion about each one. I’m not sure if it was
coincidence or not, but I had heard more of my “favorites” in the
following days after that phone survey. Hmm…

Back to the Nomad. I did some browsing around on the ‘net for
opinions. I wasn’t in the mood for mail order so it was going to be a
gadget that could be found at Best Buy, Circuit City, or MicroCenter.

The Apple iPod was out immediately. The price, marketing, and hype made
me sick just thinking about it.

I’ve had 2 Archos players. The first one was an Archos Jukebox 6000. I
loved that thing! The batteries were worn down to the point they were
useless, but I didn’t care. I always had that gadget plugged in. It
skipped every now and then but it immediately picked right back up where
it left off just like how your CD might skip in the car. But this
Jukebox got stolen out of my car (stupid me!). Figuring I had good luck
with this player, I tried Archos’ Jukebox FM 20 Recorder. Tons of
features and such as I mentioned above. But this player had issues (and
I didn’t appear to be the only one having problems – Best Buy realized
they had too many returns on it and stopped carrying a number of Archos
gear, at least from what I was told by a Best Buy employee). The GMini
looked really tempting. It had all the features of my previous Archos
and was still in my price range. But the reviews online kept saying
something like, “its great if you get one that works.” Um, no thanks.

The next choice was iRiver. They look like they might have something
going. Best Buy doesn’t get a lot of returns on them which means either
people like it and/or it doesn’t fail often. iRiver has a player with
almost all the features of the Archos FMR which would have been cool.
But I looked back at the 1 year I had my FMR and I never used all the
features (FM and recording is great, but for me, I didn’t really need
it). The price point for the iRiver 20gb FMR was too high for me to
give them a shot. The reviews seemed mostly positive with some firmware
complaints.

Then I checked out Creative Lab’s Nomad Zen Xtra 30gb player. At first,
I wasn’t a fan of the style and layout. I’m still not sold on it, but
its growing on me. The reviews seemed to be all good except for a few
that hadn’t looked at the feature set before buying. This player
doesn’t have the bells and whistles of the Archos or iRiver, but the
ones it doesn’t have are ones I don’t think I need anymore. One feature
I’m sort of bummed out about is it doesn’t connect to the PC as a drive
(although you can still copy data over to it). And it doesn’t do
directory listings. But what it does do is sort all your music by
genre, artist, and album. This wasn’t available in the Archos so I was
a bit confused. But I think I’m getting the hang of it and its actually
kind of nice. I’m discovering music I didn’t know I even had! The
battery seems to be holding up great! I used it all day yesterday and
it died finally by the end of the day. I even behaved and charged the
battery BEFORE using the player (I hadn’t done this with the 2nd Archos
I had and I think that might have caused it some problems). The sound
quality on the Nomad seems to be great. The only complaint is I’m not
sure I can find a compatible cigarette lighter power adapter for it.
But that’s minor as long as the battery keeps holding out like it
appears to. All in all, I’m happy with the Nomad.

Geauga Lake

This last weekend we went to Geauga Lake (the amusement park formerly
known as Six Flags formerly known as Geauga Lake and Sea World). It was
bought out by the company that manages Cedar Point and a number of other
parks. I had been to Geauga Lake the year before Six Flags bought them
and this was the first time going back. Basically, I managed to skip
visiting the park when it was Six Flags. It was a pretty pricey to
visit this weekend. About $70 for two adults!

We went on one of the roller coasters, the water slides, the wave pool,
and several other rides. We had a great time. We walked all the way
over to the old Sea World park and checked out what they had going which
ended up being not much. We stayed for a good 5 hours and got a little
too much sun. I ended up slightly burnt and Olessia had a bit of heat
exhaustion. We got home and didn’t do anything for the rest of the
entire evening (which actually felt good).

Ugly IE security issues

Glad I’m using Firefox and Mozilla!

Here’s the specs on the two for one special compromise: Compromised Web Sites Infect Web Surfers

And here’s the second one that listens for SSL connections and records the password info BEFORE getting encrypted: BHO scanning tool and New Scam Targets Bank Customers

For those of you using IE, I might recommend switching. Although its your computer, your passwords, your data, and your money – do as you please!
